2023 Winter Fashion Trends To Get Before They Sell Out

Winter, for me, is the hardest time to shop. I want to look cute and trendy, like one of the snow princess influencer-types who go skiing in Aspen every weekend — but the brisk temperatures force me to choose comfort over style, every single time.

So instead of looking like off-duty Bella Hadid in platform Uggs, I look similar to the Michelin Man or the Pillsbury Dough Boy. I pile on layer after layer, failing every time to keep myself warm.

But this year, I’m determined to be like one of those fashionistas who can go outside their homes and feel photo-ready. I want my jacket to do the talking, instead of hiding my statement pieces underneath a million useless layers. And to do this, I have to break up with fast fashion.

While we may save a dollar or two on sites like H&M or the soulless SHEIN, you pay the price when it comes to quality. The sweaters are itchy, flimsy, and they won’t even keep you warm. It’s like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound: sure, you’re in-trend, but at what cost?

It’s freshly December, which means lighter sweaters and shorter sleeves are out until winter. 2023 winter trends include a little mix of everything: baggy, ill-fitting denim mixed as well as straight-slim jeans, while red continues to be the color of the season, and outerwear is the most important thing about your outfit.

Believe it or not, it’s possible to feel stylish in the winter, you just have to dress smarter. That means more layers of stylish but substantial fabrics like cotton, fleece, or wool to keep you warm. So without further ado, here are some of my favorite winter trends thanks to TikTok, Vogue, and more!

It’s no longer cliche to bring out the Canadian tuxedo. Channel your inner Britney and JT with a denim jumpsuit, the perfect moment for brunch, a concert, or a night out.

Let Your Jacket Do The Talking

I’ve spent a lot of this season preaching the power of a statement coat. Your outerwear does not have to be your trusty North Face puffer coat, no matter how reliable she is. Instead, play your cards right by catering your jacket to your outfit.

Whether you prefer sherpa, fur, puffer, trench, leather, or peacoats, having a few staple jackets in your closet can spice up your fit game. It’s the reason Kylie Jenner’s KHY has that fire leather trench: your jacket is no longer the thing checked at the door.

Seeing Red

There are tons of people out there who would tell you that red is their color. And while that may be true, red is everyone’s color this winter. We saw it happening in the fall, where richer colors like royal blue and aubergine were trending alongside the classic red.

Now, it seems like we can’t escape it. Kendall Jenner just wore a red dress to the 2023 Academy Museum Gala, Taylor Swift dons a predictably red jacket to the Kansas City Chiefs game…you get the pattern.

Business Casual

Think of the Old Money style that Sofia Richie has perfected: tailored pants, cashmere cardis wrapped around shoulders, always elevating the plain tank top. Richie knows a thing or two about building the ultimate capsule closet and elevating her basics…and she’s easily our style icon of the year.

Take a page out of her book because the business casual preppy look is still a favorite this season. Grab your blazers, we’re going shopping.

Baggy Jeans

I love to feel like none of my clothes are touching my body, it’s the ultimate level of comfort. Thankfully for myself and many others, skater-style baggy denim jeans are in. Go for the ultra baggy look by pairing them with a sweatshirt…or show your proportions with a fitted baby tee.

And Not So Baggy Jeans

You have to know by now that trends cycle. And, unfortunately, that means skinny jeans will somehow find their way back to society whether we like it or not. We are at the stage where straight leg jeans (AKA a touch of flare at the bottom) are surging back into stores.

The Kardashians, Hailey Bieber, and Kaia Gerber have all been spotted in the fitted denim, so expect a major resurgence.
