Alarmy: The Most Annoying App to Get You Out of Bed in the Morning

Not a morning person? This app is for you.

Pretty much everyone hates getting up in the morning. It's the easiest thing in the world to hit snooze and go back to sleep. But not only does this slow down your morning, you probably won't wake up feeling any more rested than before. The best thing to do is to actually get up when your alarm goes off. But that's easier said than done. For this reason, Alarmy is the best app you can have on your smartphone.

There are plenty of alarm alternatives on the app store. Ones that require you to shake your phone a certain amount of times. Ones that give you a math problem to solve. Even ones that will turn your lights on instead of playing sounds. I've tried literally every option out there, but none have worked as well as Alarmy. This is because the app offers features that no other one has.

When you create an alarm in the app, you can set a “mission." This is a task you have to do to turn off the alarm. You can set to default, which just gives you a button to turn it off. This is just like every other alarm. The meat of Alarmy comes from the other missions available. You can set it to shake or solve a math problem. These are great, but where the app truly shines is in the last two: take a picture and scan a barcode or QR code.

When you set an alarm's mission to “take a picture," you'll be required to set a picture that you have to take to turn off your alarm. This is designed to get you out of your bed. You could set it to your ceiling, but you should probably set it as your bathroom sink or shower. The “scan a barcode" mission works similarly, except you'll be scanning the barcode on a book or package. Ideally, this item should be some distance away from your bed. The second you're out of bed and standing, you're much more awake than you were laying in bed. No snooze necessary.

I cannot overstate how useful these simple features have been for me. This app really works. (The tagline is “sleep if u can," after all.) I am a night owl and a serial snoozer. It's rare that I happily hop out of bed in the morning. I have to trick myself to get it done. But with the requirement to scan a barcode of a book on my shelf, I am out of bed in two seconds. Not happily, but at least I'm standing in another room. By the time I deactivate my alarm, I'm awake and ready for my coffee and breakfast. It's a wonder.

One small drawback is that the camera missions can get a little tricky in dark or spotty lighting. But if you're trying to wake up, you should turn on the lights anyway.

The best part is the app is completely free. There is an in-app purchase to remove ads, but I haven't found any of the ads to be too annoying. There is also a dashboard that shows you the weather and current news once you deactivate your alarm, but I never look at it. Another possibly useful feature is the ability to play sleep music or ambient sounds for up to one hour as you fall asleep. I also never use this feature. Overall, this app has completely revolutionized my morning routine. It's available on iOS and Android and you're totally missing out if you don't go download it right now.
