6 statement pieces you need in your fall wardrobe

Fall is just around the corner. Here's how to get your closet into shape.

When the beginning of September nears and the weather turns cooler, the time for scarves and jeans has arrived. Fall weather calls for a different wardrobe than the hot summer months. Here are a few pieces you should have in your closet.

1. Scarves

I don't know about you, but the first thing I think of when fall hits is scarves. These are my absolute favorite accessory during the chilly months. And I have quite a collection to pick from. But even if you only have one or two in your wardrobe, you still have plenty of options. At the very least, you should have one warmer scarf and one that's lighter – preferably in neutral tones that you can pair with various outfits. Infinity scarves are great because they're easy to put on. However, a traditional scarf gives you more options when you're tying it around your neck. But it's still up to your personal preference.

2. Flannel

Flannel of any kind can be the perfect pop of color or pattern in your autumn outfit. You can wear a long-sleeved flannel button down under a coordinating sweater and have the sleeves and collar poke out. You can wear flannel as a light jacket over a plain summer dress. If you want to go really simple, just tie a flannel shirt around your waist. The good thing is flannel will pretty much go with anything so you have quite a bit of creative freedom.

3. Sweaters

Of course, what's fall without sweaters? Lighter sweaters will help you during transitional weather. On those days where it is pretty chilly in the morning and warm later in the day, layering a sweater on top of your outfit will help keep you warm. Once the sun comes out, you can shed that top layer so you don't overheat. As it gets closer to winter, the thicker sweaters will keep you cozy all day long.

4. Leggings

Leggings are also great for transitional weather. The leggings will keep your legs warm during the chilly mornings, but won't make you too hot in the warmer afternoons. If you don't already have a black pair in your wardrobe, you really should. Plain leggings in any color will pair well with oversized sweaters, cardigans and even flannel. This is a simple, but stylish autumn look.

5. Boots

Time to put away your sandals and bring out those cute boots. Shorter ankle-length boots in neutral colors can be a great finishing piece to any of your fall outfits. Longer knee high or thigh length ones pair nicely with an autumn dress or leggings. Close toed shoes with wedges will also pair nicely with the fall aesthetic.

6. Jackets

Of course, colder weather requires jackets. On days where you don't really want to add on a sweater or just need an extra layer of warmth, jackets will come in handy. You don't even have to have more than one. As long as your jacket is in neutral tones, it'll go with any outfit you might have planned. Bonus points if it has lots of pockets for your gloves, beanies or any other accessories you want to keep with you.
