Congratulations On Your New Home! Here's What You Need Before You Move In

Adulting is tough.

When I think of adulting...there's a big purchase that comes to mind. The one that makes you truly an "adult." (And no, it's not a car.) That's right, buying a home...spending years of hard-earned cash on the most expensive thing, you'll probably ever buy.

For me, becoming a homeowner was one huge adulting rite of passage – and one that is fresh in my mind since my husband and I recently purchased our first home. We bought a cute, 1500 square foot home not far from where I grew up. Picket fence, front porch, ivy covered mailbox. Everything I had always dreamed of for my first home.

What isn't cute is the amount of responsibility that comes with homeownership (totally epic realization!) Mortgage payments – check. The increase in monthly bills - check. Purchasing homeowner's insurance – check. Another adult realization? Thinking that most basic homeowner's insurance covers everything that goes wrong in your home. Reality check – it doesn't! Most homeowners can still end up spending a lot of money out of pocket to repair a system in your home if something happens just from normal wear and tear.

For instance, did you know that, in most cases, homeowners are responsible for the sewer and water lines leading to the home? Well, it's a fact. You can look it up. If there's a problem with those lines, I, as the homeowner, am gonna have to pay for it. Yet another bill and expense! (Can I please revert back to my renter status ASAP?)

But my longing for my younger, carefree, renter days is a thing of the past. One night, I was watching TV and saw an ad talking about a company called HomeServe. Turns out HomeServe offers home repair plans that help you deal with the costs associated with unexpected home repairs from normal wear and tear that aren't covered by typical basic homeowner's insurance. Which is good because I did some research: it turns out that problems that usually happen due to wear and tear around the home are not covered by my basic homeowners' insurance. (Good thing I checked.)

I decided to look into the plans from HomeServe. Turns out they offer coverage for the repair or replacement of important home systems and can help you deal with these common home repair issues:

  1. Heating/Cooling System Failure
  2. Burst Water Pipes/Plumbing Issues
  3. Electrical Problems

Plus, it's affordable! A plan is relatively inexpensive - they start at as low as $7.99 a month. (Love that!) When you're prepared before things go wrong, you can avoid home repair headaches down the line.

And the best thing? My neighbor had a plan from HomeServe, and when he had an issue with his plumbing line, HomeServe was there to help. You see, HomeServe is crazy committed to customer service (which is not easy to find these days.) When you have a plan in place and something covered goes wrong, HomeServe finds a technician for you. They have a 24-hour repair hotline you can call any time of the day or night.

I was sold. I got myself a few plans from HomeServe. Now when something on my plans goes wrong, I don't hesitate to call them. And I know that the problem will be fixed.

I guess adulting isn't so bad, after all.
