Customised Hair Care: All Your Questions Answered

Recently, my friend hasn't stopped raving about her personalised shampoo and conditioner. I was surprised to learn that she had bought it online from a company I had never heard of called Function of Beauty. You get your own customised formula and bottle, made and developed in New York City, and seriously, her hair has never looked or felt better. I've been tired of my old, bought-from-Woolies shampoo and conditioner, and decided to try out Function of Beauty myself and see if it was as good as it looks on Instagram. Here's some of the things I learnt along the way:

Why is Function of Beauty different?

Unlike supermarket and even hairdresser products which only focus on one issue, Function of Beauty takes into account everything that makes your hair different. Function of Beauty sells customised shampoo and conditioner online, with your hair type, goals, and preferences in mind. The ingredients, colours, and fragrances are all customised to fit your personal formula, and the bottles even have your name on them (and not like a label, it's literally etched into them).

How does it work?

The journey to your own unique formula begins with the Function of Beauty hair quiz. To start, you select your hair type, hair structure, and scalp moisture. I was a little confused by which options to choose, but luckily they have more detailed descriptions on their FAQ page. Next you get to select your "hair goals," which include options like volumise, strengthen, oil control, and many more. You even get to pick the colours and fragrance you want. Finally, you pick your preferred bottle sizes and if you want a one-time purchase or to start a subscription.

Why does everyone love it?

It's cute and actually works! Each bottle is sleek, colourful, and looks great on your Instagram while still giving your hair what it needs. Function of Beauty celebrates individuality and has created a product that can be used by people with all different hair types. The quiz is simple and fun to fill out, I mean who doesn't love to choose from the great scents like feeling (f)ineapple and hibis(kiss)? I was also excited to learn that all Function of Beauty formulas are paraben, sulfate, and cruelty free, as well as vegan. It's a fun way to be able to express myself and put my own stamp on my hair and knowing I'm doing it responsibly.

How much does it cost?

Prices vary depending on the size of the bottle, but it's worth noting it is WAY cheaper than high end salon brands like Oribe, Kerastase and Aveda and the quality is way better. The most popular choice is the 16oz shampoo + 16oz conditioner for (475mL) for $79. They also have a smaller option with an 8oz shampoo + 8oz (235 mL) conditioner for $59. There's even an option to mix and match the sizes of your shampoo and conditioner bottles, which I love since I always seem to use my shampoo faster than conditioner. They also offer free returns if you aren't happy with your personal formula as well as a free re-make if you're not 100% satisfied with you formula.

How does the subscription option work?

With a subscription, your personal formula is saved and shipped to you as regularly as you want. You can choose between getting your bottles delivered every month, every 2 months, or every 3 months. They'll email you a few days before your next order in case any information, like your formula or address, needs to be updated. Shipping is free (even with the product being made in and shipped from New York City!) and you can pause or cancel at anytime. I signed up for a 2 month subscription and it's been the perfect amount for my hair.

Function of Beauty is a fun way to get personalised hair care that matches your hair needs. I'm done buying my hair care at the hairdresser or supermarket. Now I have shampoo and conditioner that are custom-made to my hair goals. Thanks to Function, my hair has never been softer or silkier!
